History of Rootstown
Founded by Ephraim Root, a lawyer and promoter of the Connecticut Land Company, in 1802, Rootstown was named after him and started its history there. The Rootstown Post Office was established in 1821 and still exists today under the ZIP Code oof 44272, which occupies most of Rootstown.
The town started growing in 1832 when German immigrants came, who were mostly farmers, stome masons, and carpenters. Thirteen years later in 1845 a plague took 49 peoples' lives, including the towns only physician, Dr. Andrew Basset. In 1850, a group of 16 whaling sea captains from Nantucket bought land built large homes, and became excellent farmers in the town at the time.The first general store was opened in 1853 by Nelson Converse in the center of town.

Electricity eventually came to the Rootstown area in 1921. In 1949, street lights were added to New Milford Road. The Volunteer Fire Department was formed by twenty-six men in 1938. The equippment for the fire fighters was stored in the basement of the town hall, until a building was made to store their equippment in 1956. In 2002, a new building was cinsrtucted for the fire fighters, which opened during the bicentennial week. The only school system in Rootstown in is Rootstown Local Schools.
